A Guide to Sheffield

Sheffield became a city in 1893, and it was during the 19th century that Sheffield became a major steel manufacturer, and his since become known as the Steel City. Sheffield is also known for its sport, most notably for football, for which they formed the first ever football team (Sheffield F.C.) and own the world's oldest football ground (Sandygate Road).

Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet

  • Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet is an industrial museum, charting the history of steel manufacturing in Sheffield. The museum itself has a history as a steel-working site dating back to the 13th century. The site is an ancient monument, whilst the works are Grade I listed. The museum demonstrates the techniques of steel making.

    It is free to enter from Sunday to Thursday between the months of April and October.

Conisbrough Castle

  • Conisbrough Castle is of Norman heritage, which is well-preserved, has panoramic views from the castle's keep, has staged displays charting how life was lived during the 12th century. A museum and a shop is also available.

    Prices start from £2.70 with a complimentary mince pie (subject to availability).
